What is Social Media?

While there are many different ways to define social media, we think the best definition is reached when you break down the term. Think of it this way: if “media” refers to a vehicle that delivers information (like a newspaper, a magazine or TV), and “social” means having contact with other people, then “social media” refers to websites that not only provide information, but also give you a chance to interact as well. There are countless examples of social media: Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and others. Blogs and YouTube are also considered social media.
Why Should a Company Engage in Social Media Marketing?
There’s no doubt about it—with each passing year, more and more business is conducted online. After all, the Internet is not only where people find information and interact with one another, it’s also where they bank, pay bills, shop and do business! If you’re not utilizing the power of social media to promote your business, chances are you’re already falling behind your competition.
Another consideration is, of course, the cost. A recent study calculated the cost per lead for traditional forms of marketing—i.e., advertising in newspapers, TV, radio and magazines, for example—compared to the cost per lead for social media. The difference is staggering: As of 2011, the cost-per-lead for social media is about $140, while the cost per lead for traditional forms of marketing is about $370. Just think of it—you can keep up with your competitors’ marketing efforts by using social media AND save money over more traditional forms of advertising. Sounds like a win-win situation!
The Growth of Social Media
The numbers don’t lie. As of February 2012, there were nearly 800 million active Facebook users. There were over 140 million active Twitter users as of March 2012, and that number is growing every day. Just think about it logically: where else can you reach that number of people except in social media? And it’s not just all about Facebook and Twitter. Blogs attract a huge audience. Recent statistics show that websites with blogs generate 55% more visitors than websites without blogs. Not only that, but companies with blogs generate 79% more Twitter followers! It’s pretty obvious that social media attracts huge numbers of people. So why wouldn’t you utilize that visibility to promote your company, service or product?
